What Canon was responding to is that the vast majority of people shoot 
programmed auto exposure today, particularly at the amateur level.  The one 
control dial lets you choose alternate shutter speed/aperture combinations and 
with a function button presses the one control dial lets you bias the auto 
exposure +/-.

This even works with manual, the main dial controls shutter speed and the main 
dial plus a function button controls aperture.  Not too hard to do and very 
rarely done by the customer in the target market for any Rebel model.
