Robert, 400D (XTi) wasn't available when I bought 30D, but I would've bought the 30D anyway. For me, the back-wheel is one of the deciding factors as is the feel in the hands (I "suspect" that the difference is similar to that of 350D). 5fps as well as 1/8000 are rarely used, for me at least. I suggest you try them both and then decide. I wouldn't mind self-cleaning sensor on my 30D, as I wouldn't mind ECF and sensor image stabilisation... :)
