To Pattie and the group,

I just sent a (relative's) Rebel in to Canon for repair. It stopped autofocusing because the small secondary mirror, which hangs off the primary mirror got stuck. If you remove the lens from your friend's camera, you should see both mirrors with the smaller autofocus mirror behind the large front one. If the two mirrors are stuck together, gently push the secondary one towards the sensor.

If you are lucky, you can fix the camera. The Rebel I fooled around with autofocused perfectly after I gently teased the mirror down. However, the secondary mirror stayed down and made a huge shadow on all the images. That's when it got sent to Canon.

I have the Tamron 1.4X TC that works fine with my 70-200 f/2.8L and
300 f/4 L on both my 10D and 20D bodies.

FWIW, a friend recently upgraded from the Digital Rebel (not sure
which model) to the 20D because her Rebel completely stopped
autofocusing, regardless of which lens she was using.
