Mode 2 is for servo focus like following a bird in flight. You
should not use IS
in any mode with that lens on a tripod.
What mode 2 does is sense when only one axis is needed. I keep mine
on mode 2 at
all times. If you're not swinging the camera around, mode 2 works
exactly like
mode 1.
