This might be a little late to do you any good, but here goes...
ALL of my camera equipment was purchased used. Well, with the exception of some filters and batteries. All my bodies and lenses, my bags and tripods were all purchased used.
I'm not a professional photographer who's business would be affected by a breakdown so by accepting the risk that used equipment may be less reliable than new, I've saved a lot of money.
It turns out, I've only had one problem with a piece of used equipment. The mode selection dial on an EOS 5 (A2) broke, but it turns out that this is an epidemic problem on these cameras so the fact that it was used had no effect.
I've never purchased anything refurbished by Canon, but I understand that refurbished programs are a good way to get "like new" equipment at a small discount. I'd rather buy truly used and save more money.
