The one difference between newer lenses and the older ones
relates to the fact digital sensors are more reflective that film,
which can reduce the contrast compared with film. Hence newer
lenses tend to do a better job of minimizing reflection issues
from the sensor.

Since I came to EOS from Olympus cameras, I only know the newer
Canon lenses. The 16-35 is a nice lens. The Lens hood makes the lens
appear much larger. In the 24-35mm range, I like it better than the
24-105/4.
