It's my #1 lense as well...I'm not casting it aside, just saying that I am
skeptical that they would bring out an IS version of it, and questioning IS
for such a focal length.

Well, IS is less significant for shorter focal lengths.  Are you actually
getting blurry images using this lense?  What shutter speeds are you
shooting at?  I use the 24-70 on a 1V with the BP-E2, and it's rock solid.
I do admit, I run out of "room" using 400 indoors with incandescent
lighting, so I tend to use a strobe, or switch to the 24/1.4...then I'm
fine.  I'll shoot down to 1/15 and get quite decent shots, but at 1/30 with
the 24/1.4 I get sharper pictures.
