Of course, especially with available light photography indoors in 
*social* context, this only works if your subjects are willing to 
'freeze' too....:))
In the old times, one would switch to bulb, and put the camera steady 
in the middle of the table....for group-shots, this even made a swing-
lens panorama-camera fun, although the long effective shutter/swing 
time (several seconds for an exposure time of 1/2s) is always tricky, 
making sure everyone *stays* frozen during the entire shot.
(and not taking the purring sound for the pre-release phase of an old-
fashioned timer (but that association has been fading over time too, 
hardly everyone remembers that particular sound nowadays....:))
