The older Nikon 105mm was a lens that is very sharp, but there is a lot of myths about it and as time goes on those myths become larger. Was it sharp? Yes. Sharper than modern lenses? Depends which lens you compare it to. I would put my new Sigma 70mm F2.8 EX against your Nikon 105mm but I have to tell you, I have used both and in my opinion the Sigma is the best macro I have seen since Kiron stopped making lenses. I loved the Kiron 105mm F2.8 which among the sharpest macro lenses made. It was the only lens that the lab asked what lens I was using when they processed my slides (about 15 years ago). They had never seen such sharp images. And this is not just the opinion of a few. The Vivitar Series 1 105 Macro, a lens many pros bought, was made by Kiron. Nowadays they are long out of the photo lens business. The 50mm F1.4 is a great lens, but the fact that you have a loose front element means you should get it checked. It is still more a consumer grade lens much like the Nikon 50mm F1.4. Mine is fine and I am not easy on my lenses. Maybe you have a defective one.

I too, have experienced this problem in the past or seen my posts arrive way out of sequence. As a commercial photographer, the 100mm f2.8 Macro has had the most impact on me. When I first bought my 1Ds, I got it with zoom lenses. I was disappointed in the image quality until I got the 100mm Macro. For product and portrait work, this lens is ideal. Autofocus is fast, accurate and a boon to my aging eyes. Subsequently, I bought a 50mm f1.4 and found that it too delivers a good image. But the loose front element on this lens has always made me wonder about Canon design. My ancient Nikon 105mm f2.5 Macro, and, to a lesser extent, the Nikon 50mm f1.4 can still beat my current Canon lenses. Not everything newer is sharper.
