Subject: EOS 1D mk III
I called Calumet today to talk to them about the differences between a
300mm f/2.8 and a 300mm f/4. I also asked about the mk III, and I was
told that Canon says mid May for the camera to ship now.
I'm still trying to decide if I want the f/2.8, or if I could get by
with the f/4. I suspect I can't. But I can afford the f/4 right now,
and I can't afford the f/2.8. Sigh. So many tough choices.

Hi William,
I bought a new EF 300 f4L for a good price just when the newer IS version
was being introduced, and it's served me well, but a year ago I paid more
than twice as much for a somewhat battered EF 300 f2.8L (again without IS).
I knew the f2.8L was heavier, but I hadn't expected it to make such a
difference. I was using it for birding, rather than sports.
First off was that my previously sturdy and secure tripod head was no
longer! I found that I was constantly on guard against letting the lens and
camera combo take a fall. Eventually, after perusing the Wimberley, Kirk,
and other websites, and thinking these items are way too pricey for amateur
use , I discovered the Manfrotto (Bogen in the US) head #393. (I paid around
100GBP.)
Despite their poor sales pitch for this item, it is a gimbal head with good
design, excellent finish and strength, and not using the cantilever
principle as espoused by Kirk etc., isn't too heavy. I can now balance my
heavy lens/camera combo and when I add my 2x extender, it's easy to
re-balance. As expected, it makes a quite heavy combo with my original
Benbo (Mk 1) tripod, but it's very stable and has allowed me to get some
super bird images.
(Just wish I could afford a new EF 300 f2.8L USM IS but my old lens does
pretty well providing the driver does his bit.)
Cheers,
Malcolm
