I called Calumet today to talk to them about the differences between a
300mm f/2.8 and a 300mm f/4. I also asked about the mk III, and I was
told that Canon says mid May for the camera to ship now.
I'm still trying to decide if I want the f/2.8, or if I could get by
with the f/4. I suspect I can't. But I can afford the f/4 right now,
and I can't afford the f/2.8. Sigh. So many tough choices.
I got by OK with "just" the 300/4 L IS for birds. I just picked up a
new 500/4 L IS and kept the 300/4 for flight shots as well as
butterfly hunting. One HUGE difference (not only the size and
aperture) between the 300/2.8 and 300/4 is the minimum focus
distance. The 300/4 is about 4ft which makes it a great butterfly
lens. And it goes really well with the 1.4x TC II.
Folks, please, I keep opening these e-mails thinking there is something
interesting about the 1D Mk 3, and all I have seen in these threads in
the past day or so have been about tripods and lenses.
Could you please kindly at least change the subject lines to the
subject you want to discuss or respond?
Thanks
Ken
