I called Calumet today to talk to them about the differences between a
300mm f/2.8 and a 300mm f/4. I also asked about the mk III, and I was
told that Canon says mid May for the camera to ship now.

I'm still trying to decide if I want the f/2.8, or if I could get by
with the f/4. I suspect I can't. But I can afford the f/4 right now,
and I can't afford the f/2.8. Sigh. So many tough choices.

I got by OK with "just" the 300/4 L IS for birds. I just picked up a new 500/4 L IS and kept the 300/4 for flight shots as well as butterfly hunting. One HUGE difference (not only the size and aperture) between the 300/2.8 and 300/4 is the minimum focus distance. The 300/4 is about 4ft which makes it a great butterfly lens. And it goes really well with the 1.4x TC II.
