It is *much* better than any 7x-300 with TC. Indeed it is significantly better than those even without TCs. The only drawbacks besides the price are size and weight (and perhaps push-pull zoom design, which some people don't like), but in image quality there's really no contest. > I read somewhere that going with a teleconverter and one > of my current lens might actually yield decent results. Unlikely. Some years ago I did experiment with the 75-300IS and various 3rd party TCs, with mostly depressing results. If you're not very demanding you might get some tolerable shots with 1.4x, but don't even think of 2x. The images will be unbearably soft even if you somehow manage to focus with it (autofocus won't work even with 1.4x, and with 2x the viewfinder is so dark it's all but impossible to focus manually either). > Since the 100-400 doesn't go beyond 400, 7x-300 + 1.4x doesn't go much beyond that either. And you can always get 1.4x TC for the 100-400 later - that combination does work fairly well (not great, but comparable to those 7x-300 without TC). > But, if the quality of the teleconveter combo sucked, then I > might opt for the 100-400. It sucks. Go for the 100-400. -- Tapani Tarvainen * **** ******* *********************************************************** * For list instructions, including unsubscribe, see: * http://www.a1.nl/phomepag/markerink/eos_list.htm ***********************************************************
