My beloved 1D Mk 2 suddenly ceased working yesterday in the middle of an airshow, the top LCD displayed all the pertinent information right up until I press the shutter release, it wouldn't focus and wouldn't trip off the shutter, the top LCD will at this time display Error 01, which according to the manual is for "lens and body fail to communicate".
I tried different lens, removed the battery (which had been fully charged and the power indicator on the top LCD showed full charge), cleaned the contacts on the body and the lenses, nothing can bring the camera back to working condition. Interestingly enough, I noticed a few times I was not even able to turn the power off with the power switch, i.e. the top LCD still displayed settings while the power switch has been turned to the off position. I was also unable to enable the sensor cleaning mode to see perhaps if the shutter mechanism is buggered. Using this link below that was posted on this list in April this year, my camera showed 86,285 frames counts (which sounds about right based on memory of how many times I have rolled the counter over), I hope the problem is not with the shutter as it is supposed to be "tested to over 200,000 cycles" according to Canon literature. I will be taking the camera in to Canon for repair, in the mean time, any thoughts or suggestions from the group? Other than getting an 1D Mk 3, which I wouldn't mind, but would find it difficult to justify especially when there is the auto focusing tracking problem being reported by many owners of this camera.
