Well, I'm sorry to say I'm not in shape to carry my 1D Mark II, L lenses, 550, etc., on a 30 mile backpacking trip through the Desolation Wilderness in August. I'd like to have a chance of a few good shots anyway.

So would anyone care to recommend the state of the art in compact cameras?

What I'm hoping for is:

1. Good image quality. Surely it won't be at the level of the big rig, but most of the little guys are "instamatic" quality and I'd like something at least worth the trouble of taking it along. Decent glass and a good sensor.

2. Compact (of course), but it doesn't have to be shirt-pocket tiny.

3. Battery life enough for several days or batteries can be replaced (no wall plug!)

4. Enough control to be able to deal with funny light and focus, and, hopefully, a RAW or similar format to facilitate touch-up.

Less than $1,000 would be cool, but I'm willing to go more for the right box.

What's the word, fellow EOS fans?

The Canon 800IS is great; I've used one ever since it came out as it's an ideal 'carry everywhere' camera for my needs (architecture/construction site records). The 28mm setting and IS are very nice.

If you're willing to carry something bigger, the S5IS might do it, but it only goes down to 36mm equiv, but way up to over 400, and more control. My preference in this category are the Panasonics, currently the FZ-18. Down to 28 and up to over 500 with great image quality if you use the lowest ISO (as you should with the Canons). All these small sensor cameras except for the Fujis can't really be used at over 200ISO.

With respect to AA's; many of the cameras that can use them only get 20 to 30 shots per set of Alkalines. Rechargeable NiMh are the way to go, but those things and the charger are a lot larger than the little battery packs and charger that the 800IS uses, and it gets up to 250 shots per charge; sometimes more. I buy third party battery packs for less than $10, carry a bunch of them and never worry about running out of power. A lot smarter than AA Alkalines.
