Did you have a problem formatting the cards in the computer, or deleting pictures from the card while shooting? I am curious if this advice was for a specific camera? If you have to perform machinations like this, this is not how it's intended to work, and there are clearly bugs somewhere and this is a workaround. Hopefully, these issues have been sorted out by now (three years later) in the newer cameras/FLASH cards/drives.
