I too had an Elan IIe (50E in the UK) followed by an EOS3 - and started
building up a lens collection. About 5 years ago I bought a 6MP 10D, and
have hardly used film since. Two years ago I bought a 5D when its price was
close to its highest, but I was back to using my collection of lenses as
they were designed to be used, and I was very happy with the results.
I occasionally have to do a sensor clean. In my experience here (the far
from bone dry UK) dust on the sensor isn't that much of a problem, and
preferring the results from prime lenses I do change lenses quite a lot.
The economics of Digital (high capital versus low running costs) has allowed
me to indulge in bird photography. (Dabbled over the years but was always
conscious of film costs.) Lots of poor shots, some good ones, and a few
really good which makes the effort, cold, travel,.patience, etc. worthwhile.
But sorting the rubbish from the good does take time...
I can now buy a s/h 5D for about 60% what I paid 2 years ago, but I've had 2
super years and some glorious images to show for it.
