Having had a look and a think, I've got good and bad news for you.

The good news is that you've intuited some real data, although your starting
point of Social
Anthropology is one of the worsts ones to take. Cannot be helped. The
vocab'jargon used is
execrable but as you've already have some people who can access the information
buried in it.
it works. I've done much the same thing myself on a near to this topic, though
I had nobody to
point it out to me, haha. I keep it on my PC as a reminder.

You could read John Curtis Gowan. Operations of Increasing order, a freebie on
Inet + two
others quite good. He went to indian thought to show up many levels of mind
stuff as sassed out
by Yoga, etc.
Next Charles Tart, into Alterable State of Concsiousness, had a website, very
good.
Aldous Huxley ditto, forget the title
William James, Variety of mystical or religious experience.
Evelyn Underhill on Mysticism, about medieval stuff, interestingly points out
how they then
suffered from hysterical attacks of incubi and succubi having sex with them,
good way to have
wet dreams. It's one of the first and only ones I read when there was hardly
anything onit.
Have a gawp at a website of mine, nab, vfed, net. poke straight into a browser,
not on any search
engine, nab = new age book.
Theyll all put you into more directions that may help.
I prefer ZEN to both Sufism and Yoga, as well as alchemy and many English poets.

Don't give up. there's lots of higher and other states that help make it easier
and simpler. I
seems you cauht a whiff of chaos theory I'm recently into, also a good site by
McGill or something.

Apart from all that, there's them what can help themselves, them what try to
stop them, them
what cannot or won't and the nasties who want to play god and turn out to be
demons.
