Returns 24 just as expected. Maybe the depth values are cast to floats
somewhere?
So far I have just no glue where to look at. But the dynamic near/far
solution works well.

It looks as if the geometry is not properly culled away from the far plane
as well - 
it is more like disassembling (it's hard to see in the screenshots).
