Ah, a little misunderstanding. :) There is always a compound used, the loader will add them automatically for view/segment destination channels if you did not provide them. The longterm goal is to make compounds completely optional from the config file, and automagically configure all resources, including scalability. The server will always use compounds as its internal representation of the rendering configuration.
