One more thing to consider: In order to exercise the privileges of the certificate, you have to maintain currency, much like a pilot's license. Currency amounts to 6 months (40 hour weeks) experience out of the last 24 months. It's unlikely anyone could really expect to maintain that level of currency working on their own plane. (OK, I had a plane like that once...)
