Yo, Microsoft Guys, Tom
and Mitch,
What a great idea. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get your text
size changing to work on the websites that are a problem.
It seems that more and
more websites are trying for artistic control by specifying the text size based
on pixels. Many or most of these
idiots base their pixel-text size on 800x600 displays. Even with only 1024x768, some text is
uncomfortably small. On my 19”
monitors with 1280x1024, too many websites are unreadable.
On websites that specify
the size by pixels, the <View> <Text size> options don’t change the
text size. Here’s an example of a
typical problem website:
http://www.challengers101.com/ChProjHome.html
http://www.crh.noaa.gov/forecasts/ILZ037.php?warncounty=ILC179&city=East+Peoria
And, yes, the
cntl-<mouse-roll> does change size on text specified as standard sizes,
but I sure haven’t found any way to change it on more-and-more websites. Examples of text size done right are:
Tom’s http://www.ercoupers.com
Mitch’s http://www.ercoupe.org and my http://edburkhead.com
If you can find a way to
change the body text size on websites like those problem ones, please let me know. I’ve stayed loyal to IE for years until
the small text size issue overcame me – browsing with IE just became intolerable.
As to the security issue,
that article I referenced originally said there are IE security issues that
Microsoft wasn’t going to fix immediately and that’s scary. Do you have more (or conflicting)
information? (Sure hope so.)
I use the automatic
update download tool so I get my updates and install them promptly. I’ve always felt quite safe with having
an up-to-date system and nothing has infected me in 20 years of active
communicating.
Your help is appreciated.

Ed, Just FYI, if you hold CTRL and scroll with the mouse button it will
change the size of text in IE.

p.s. Before you switch to Netscape consider: Ercoupers.com is funded by IE
(did I mention I work for Microsoft? <grin>)
