Gary,
The
airport at which I learned to fly and where I flew my Coupe for several years
had 1800’ useable length. The
overrun areas were listed in the runway length but we sure didn’t use them. I always expected to be off the ground by
mid-field or be light on the wheels by that point, even when at or near (or
slightly above) 1400 lb. This was near Des Moines, Iowa, with
weather and altitude nearly identical to yours.
But
that airport had no obstructions.
That’s important because my climb was pretty slow after getting
off. Also, I had a climb prop
which helped some. With my climb
prop, I could also cruise high, lean and get range well over 350 mi. with big
reserves.
You
might like to get a Forney or Alon which have the C-90 engine and a well
matched prop. The Alon has a
sleeker canopy which is better for cruise but it can only be flown open up to
100 mph so the pre-Alon models can be nicer for open-cockpit flying.
I’d
be comfortable flying out of that field if there are no obstructions. You might shop for a light-weight Coupe
– some have had too much stuff added and used up too much of their useful load.
Let’s
see what others day.
By
the way, what is the useful load of your Titan?

I'm a new member of the Ercoupers group,
and I need your advice. I fly regularly out of a 1,650 ft. grass strip
at Lincoln, Ne. Field elevation is 1,050 ft. The strip is mowed weekly,
but at times during the summer, the grass reaches 6-8 inches in height.
I currently fly a Titan Tornado S with a Rotax 912S that develops 100
hp. I love the Titan, but it's a little limited as to useful load for
cross-country trips. Within 4 months, I plan to purchase another
aircraft that meets the following criteria: Must be able to operate
comfortably out of the 1,650 ft. strip, carry a useful load of myself and my
wife (total weight 320 lbs), up to 40 lbs of baggage, and enough gas to fly
250-300 miles at at least 100 mph. Should I consider an aircraft
in the Ercoupe/Forney/Alon/Mooney family? Thanks in advance for
your response. |
