Between the mountain ranges is a great place to do cross country flying.  I found that if I were willing to detour a state or so off course, I could almost always go around the weather and get to my destination.

The exception is, naturally, when the bad weather is hanging right over your destination.

But it seems to me like you Intermountain West people don’t have weather – you just have mid-day thermals.

In the Midwest we can only "plan" in one
direction.  Coming back requires a new plan because things change so
quickly.  But we get lots of two hour windows for just banging
around in the sky.  I think a lot of pilots don't fly unless the
wind is going to stay real low, even though the Coupes handle a cross
wind better than anything else.

Not to mention vulnerable to the whims of VFR weather, together with
good judgement. Here on the right coast, 'VFR planning' is an oxymoron.
