For what it's worth, I live in Dallas, Texas, and we see hail all the time, literally several times a year. Now, I happen to know from experience that a coupe can fly with moderate hail damage to control surfaces. I've flown in one thus damaged, the stab. looked like the creation of a two year old with a ball peen hammer, but the damage to the stab./control surfaces/fuse. didn't seem to affect the handling at all. That said, I don't know how hail would affect metal wings as the one I've flown had cloth. Even I wouldn't fly with damaged wings, I may be a fool but I'm not dumb. On a lighter note, if they total your plane can I buy it? ;) Just Kidding. But seriously, I've heard a few horror stories about unscrupulous insurance folks who have totaled vintage planes for relatively minor damage, just because they could part them out for more than the policy was worth. I don't know if the stories are true but they make an errie sort of sense in a way. Either way, good luck.
