Oops I se what you mean now but also when I put mine in I had to use the glare shield as my
instruments were higher up so I had to use the glare shield.

How does not having a glare shield reduce the room for instruments? This link shows it does work and the glare shield is not needed.

You are correct  if you want to install the Alon type panel you do have to cut the panel and need

to install the glare shield which you can not do with the flat winshield. Of course you could install

the panel without the glare shield and then you would have less room for instruments.

Kevin: I have not tried to put in the Alon style with a flat windshield, but the information I got with the Alon panel indicated that you needed the bubble windshield in place in order to use the floating panel with the gyros. They are mounted quite high, and I believe you must cut out the glare shield in order for the altimeter to fit. If you cut out the glare shield, you cut into the area below the flat windshield in front of the pilot.
