For example, a Gibson banjo built before WWII used to sell for next to nothing until Earl Scruggs played one. Recently I've seen pre-war flatheads sell for $50,000. That must be a fair price, because there ARE people willing to pay it.

Another way to look at it is if the price is agreeable to both the seller and buyer, then it must be a fair price. Just because a third party thinks it's too much doesn't make it so.
