I found the C-85 to lean very well with the Stromberg carb once the
mixture
control section of the carb had been disassembled, cleaned, stropped and
the
air passages in the carb cleaned. It does react slowly so you have to be
patient when leaning, but it leans perfectly.

I got HUGE improvements in fuel economy at high altitude. I DID also have
a
climb prop on my Coupe so I could get up high in a reasonable (though not
quick) time.

To me, the kicker here is whether you have enough power on tap. With
a C75 or the prop-challenged C85, it takes too long to get there and is
too hard to stay there. Especially with a half-dead Stromberg with the
mixture control wired rich.

The O-200 with Marvel and a proper prop seems (from my experience
with both) to be a different story.

Assuming the wind is with you. In a 100MPH airplane, you can't give much
away to a head, cross, or quartering wind. Period.
