Ok, I *know* I’ve got a demonic generator now.  I completely disconnected all the leads on the generator (at the engine) and checked it while the engine was running about 1500 RPM.  Grounded the field and checked the armature voltage.  Same as last time when I checked it at the voltage regulator- about .03 volts.  When I ungrounded the field the voltage went up just slightly to 0.5 volts.  Just to be sure I used a jumper set and grounded the frame of the aircraft to the case of the generator and it still didn’t read anything different.

So I checked and marked the direction of rotation, pulled the bugger off (which requires pulling the left mag) and brought it in to a local auto parts store to get checked.  The fellow put it on his machine and spun it the correct way and as soon as he grounded the field the generator put out a little over 14V as slick as can be.

What in the **((&&&^%% is going on ???????   The same thing happened last time I pulled the generator off- it wasn’t outputting while on the plane but was when I took it in to *two* separate shops they both said it was working fine!!!

The only thing I can possibly think of is that the brushes may be floating.  I know I’ve heard of this happening with electric RC planes when an engine is run too fast.  The fellow at the store said that he thought he was spinning the generator at about 1500 RPM but in the plane it appears by eye that the gear ratio has got to be about 4 or 5 to one which would put it up over 6000 RPM and maybe at this higher RPM the brushes can’t handle it?  Anybody know the exact gear ratio?

What else could it be?????  I’ve got to get this sucker figured out, it’s driving me crazy J

Thanks again folks.
