Al; The instrument panel has about 35 number six screws that hold it in
place. The lower 3 on each side go through the fuselage skin, and the
remainder go
through the glare shield. All of them have nuts on the underside that must
be
held with a wrench in order to remove the screws. You will need to remove
the
windshield and most of the instruments in order to gain reasonable access
to
the above screws.
The oil pressure and oil temperature gauges have lines that go
through
the firewall to the engine. Those gauges will either need to stay in the
airplane, or have the lines disconnected from the engine and pulled
through the
firewall. If you have the original wiring, may have to unsolder a couple
of fuse
holders from the wiring before you can remove the panel. Make sure you
mark
the wiring so you can hook it back up easily. The tachometer and airspeeed
connections can easily be removed from the back of the instrument
The other, sometimes difficult part, is that removing the taper
pins
that hold the control shafts in place can be a little tricky. I have found
that
you can turn the wheel to a position where you can hold a bucking bar on
the
shaft, next to the taper pin, and then use a rivet gun (air hammer) to
remove
the taper pin. after you have removed the cotter pin and loosened the nut.
If
you do not use good backing, the pins can be very difficult to remove.
I like to put blind nuts in the glare shield, so when you are ready
to
replace the panel, you can do it with all the gauges and instruments in
the
panel. This takes more time to rivet the nuts in place, but it sure is
nice to
be able to put the entire panel together on the bench.
Plan to spend several hours on your back under the panel in a very
cramped positon to get all this accomplished. >grin<
Good Luck.
