That seems to be a strange switch----When the mag switch reads left, then
the contact labeled left should be open and the contact labeled right
should
be grounded. This would leave the left mag in operation and the right
grounded.. The opposite is true when the switch reads right. This is true
of
the Bendix type GN that I have run into most often. The switch plate reads
OFF---R---L---BOTH in that order. On our small Continentals, this makes
troubleshooting a mag drop caused by a bad plug simple. A drop on the left
is caused by the lower plugs, and the right will be the upper plugs.

OH OH!!
Now for some real confusion----the print in the Ercoupe manual shows the
right mag wired to the L terminal on the switch and vis-versa
Perhaps is someone has an ORIGINAL 1946 switch they'd be kind enough to
check with an ohmmeter and see just what the contact development is and
what letter terminal is grounded with the switch in each position. Perhaps
the labeling on the print refers to what the switch plate says and not the
terminal labels.

If there is a change that exists in switch labeling, then I can see how
confusion can exist. I was absolutely NOT confused until I looked at the
original Ercoupe wiring diagram--now I'm not so certain. <G>
