Alon A-2. Never had a trim problem. Because of the AD, and the
requirement to remove the wings to accomplish it, I took my 'Coupe to some
reputable 'Coupers in TX. Took off after paying them much money, and had
the yoke just about through the panel to get level pitch. Turned around and
landed and let them "solve" the problem. They just loosened up and repositioned
the trim wire where it connects to the trim tab. OK. I flew again. Not bad but
not right. I decided I'd not let them mess with it anymore.....they hadn't got
it right yet. I took it home and discovered they hadn't tightened the
screw/clamp as it comes out of the elevator. I tightened it up, but there is
still a problem. I suspect they left something else loose inside the
fuselage.
I went over the airplane with a bit more scrutiny and found
loose clamps around my new ignition harness and loose screws holding my wheel
pants on. The left side forward wing to fuselage fairing also had loose screws.
They also put my wheel pants on at the wrong angle which was a bit dicey on my
grass strip. But they had to readjust the angle intentionally from where the
pants were when I brought them the airplane.
Bottom line: I trusted the "pros" and got back a less than
safe airplane. I've been doing my own annuals for the eight years I've owned
this airplane (I'm an A&P), then hiring an AI to go behind me, make sure I
didn't miss anything, and to check all the SDs and ADs, etc. I think I'll go
back to doing my own work. That way I KNOW it's safe.
