group,

I had noticed that over the last few months my radio had been "breaking
squelch." It would sound just like someone was pushing the test button on
the radio randomly- sometimes during transmissions, sometimes just while
listening. It was getting loud, and annoying. I talked to one avionics
shop about it and he said that "this happens as a radio ages, it just
drifts out of tune and has to be re- tuned."

Working for SkyWest airlines as I do, I walked down to our avionics shop
and asked my friend down there about it. He said, "yes that can happen
but check for corrosion first." So, after checking I found corrosion on
the antenna post and connector, on the BNC connector for the coax on the
back of the radio rack, and then pulling the radio out of it's rack we
noticed some really light discoloration on the pins. As you may all know,
on the back of your radio rack is a multi-pin connector that the radio
plugs into when it slides in the rack. Just sliding the radio out and
back into the rack a time or two cleans up the little pins.

I put it all back together and it doesnt break squelch any more in factg
it sounds stronger and clearer than it has for quite some time. Hope
someone on the list saves themselves an expensive avionics shop visit by
finding the same thing.
