The first rule of avionics troubleshooting is to check all switch positions! Make sure the vol. control knob is not pulled out shutting off the squelch. My Apollo SL-40 will break squelch when I am near the jillion watt TV antennas in the local area. I went in to the radio menu and adjusted the squelch setting. The TV signals overpower the radios 'front end'. This could be your problem with breaking squelch. The other fixes mentioned are also very good ides. Craig, ham radio call NM0L.
