John, have not talked with you in a while. I made a new fuel gauge with
some parts that I bought from Univair. I called them and described what
I needed and they provided the gage, cork float and gage glass. The
rest I had to make from 4140 sheet steel. Was not very difficult. But
as the rest say, I would also just remove the plug and reseal it. The
tank has a backing plate on the inside of the tank that has 10 or so #4
nuts mounted to it. If this plate is missing, a large amount of work
would be required to open the tank and replace it. (if you can find
one.) This plate is riveted to the tank top with two flat headed
rivets. The assembly goes somewhat like this top to bottom :
1. Round ring with matching holes for the 10 screws with a big hole in
the middle.
2. Gage glass (Plexiglas or acrylic, NOT lexan as it will craze if
exposed to hydrocarbons)
3. Cork gasket with the same shape as item 1.
4. Indicator plate. A round plate with matching 10 holes and a
hourglass hole in the middle. The back of this plate has a "U" shaped
bracket that holds the indicator. The bracket is riveted to the plate
with 2 flat head rivets.
5. Indicator mounted to the bottom of item 5 on the "U" shaped piece.
with cork float.
6. Cork gasket.
7. Tank outer surface.

I purchased the indicator from Univair, made item 4 and bracket from
4140 sheet steel, and also made items 2, 3, and 6.
Hey, let's get together for lunch. I retired the first of June and now
have the time to meet your busy schedule. Let me know. Also moved into
a new home about six miles from the airport. Call me at 912-882-3438
when you can.
