Hi Chip, The low compression of the C-65, C-75 and C-85 was happy with 73 octane. 80/87 became the "fuel of choice" only 73 octane avgas disappeared, but no more power was produced. The only reasons to use a fuel of higher octane than an engine needs to produce rated power is if such fuel is (1) free or (2) all that is easily available. Even then there are usually added precautions prudent in "long run"use of such fuel that strongly suggest that lower octane lower lead fuels that meet engine requirements be used whenever and wherever possible. The record would seem to indicate our low-compression engines really don't like being fed 100LL as a steady diet. So long as a FBO is unwilling or unable to stock and sell auto gas for those aircraft that choke on 100LL, he/she has earned neither our business or our loyalty.. Regards, William R.
