However, I do know that the rear tie down was designed to do just that -
tie the plane DOWN.
I am concerned about the lateral loads the tie down ring will
handle. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Percy] I had my Ercoupe tied down next to a Cessna 150. My tail was
attached, the 150's was not. The 150 blew over - tail over wings.
Cost the FBO some bucks to get fixed. The FBO beat out my cone in
the tale for free (to me). Both airplanes were facing away from
the wind.
Take a hint from the birds. They never
purch tale into the wind!
