What else did you have done at the time? Swapping mags
and plugs should be a 2 hour job, tops. Also, was the $1800 for everything
(I hope) or just the mags? If just the mags, it would be a good thing if
you posted the shop that did this for you so that the rest of us could remain
clear of it.
Larry, if I were in a similar situation (at a strange
airport), I would have the mag repaired then make the decision whether or not to
make a switch. At a foreign airport, you may get hit with a bill like Bob
had to pay. Rebuilding the mag should be about $200 (to the shop), but it
may be just something simple. Being in the farm country, parts should be
readily available locally.
