What else did you have done at the time?  Swapping mags and plugs should be a 2 hour job, tops.  Also, was the $1800 for everything (I hope) or just the mags?  If just the mags, it would be a good thing if you posted the shop that did this for you so that the rest of us could remain clear of it. 
 
Larry, if I were in a similar situation (at a strange airport), I would have the mag repaired then make the decision whether or not to make a switch.  At a foreign airport, you may get hit with a bill like Bob had to pay.  Rebuilding the mag should be about $200 (to the shop), but it may be just something simple.  Being in the farm country, parts should be readily available locally.

In answer to Larry Snider's question on the flyin formum : I just had new Slick mags installed. With the new plugs the cost was $1827.
In addition there was 5.5 hours of labor.
