I assumed everyone was talking about the comparison between wings covered in the two materials. Of course the comparison of an uncovered wing with one covered in metal is not a valid comparison. So has all the discussion in the past on the weight penalty of 38 or so pounds of the metal wings been on the comparison of covered wings? Sure the aluminum weight added is around 40 pounds. Throw in a handful rivets. But on the other hand, before covering the wings with sheet metal , you remove the fabric from the wings. This fabric , soaked in dope and paint is not weightless, one has to subtract the weight of the fabric from the total numbers. So instead of an increase of 40 pounds in weight, one might end up with a total of 20 pounds.
