James,

Yep, I have felt that jolt of fear from a dropped nose tank wire. It's
worth adding that into your second tier of instrument scans - the ones you
do every 2-5 minutes.

The smart guys will give you good information on debugging this but I've got
a question: Why do you think you need a new fuel pump? From your
description I don't see any fuel pump problems.

Alon N5655F owner and I took off over the craggy mountains in the Aircoupe
I've been working on since May. We got bad coordinates for our destination
and were looking for a field in the mountainous hinterlands when we noticed
the fuel gauge had dropped and was barely bobbing. Thankfully there was
enough fuel in the header tank to get us to Sevierville, TN.

The other problem is that, while we were climbing out, our gas blew out the
one wing tank filler cap with a ram-air hole in it. We estimate we lost a
good third of our gas. And we just had John Wright, Jr. fix the leaks, so
it's kind of late to have the system undergo the procedure to fix this
overflow problem pursuant to the service letter in the service letters
volume we bought from John Cooper after having sent the tanks off for
re-welding and new rivets. I'd hate to pull that header tank out again, now
that the bruises from reinstalling it have just recently faded away.

So. We need a fuel pump and some kind of fix for that gas siphoning out
that wingtank lid. As usual thanks in advance for the splendid courtesy we
have always received during the restoration of this wonderful little
Aircoupe. I'm inclined to buy a pump from John Cooper since he has been so
helpful in the past.

Glad to be alive today,
James L. Smith
somewhere in the mountains of western North Carolina, where I kissed the
ground, after having gotten safely back upon it.
