Rick,

My opinion. At 1800 SMOH it is really starting to become a gamble. In the realistic world, that is overhaul time for many, many engines. True, a few, expecially with better oils (and higher cost to overhaul) are going into the 2000+ times. I'm guessing those generally have been used frequently, acquiring those hrs. in not so many years. The majority of small A and C series engines historically don't make it much past 1500 between overhauls, used as infrequently as most are. In the olden days (50s/60s) rule of thumb was TOP at 500 and overhaul at 1000. Again, much cheaper then. A high time engine should be accompanied by a low selling price. The seller knows he/she has a limited market because of the prospect of the new owner seeing a $10K overhaul bill possibly with the next flight. They should at least offer you a good bargin that would offer you some help on the cost of an overhaul. I find that most high time engine aircraft are bought by A&Ps (or owners who have the overhaul skills) knowing they can overhaul themselves, pocketing the cost difference. Overhauls are just too expensive now to take a chance with needing soon. Just my opinion. roger ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ulrich Hertig" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Subject: [COUPERS-TECH] C-85 approaching TBO time

----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]----

Dear Coupers,

right now I have a chance to buy a Coupe which seems
to be in excellent condition but the engine has almost
1800 hrs. All 4 cylinders have been replaced during
the last 150 hrs. The seller says the engine runs
fine, uses hardly any oil and has a high oil pressure
indication so there is nothing to worry about.
Now is it advisable to run an engine beyond its TBO
time? And how about the other parts in the engine like
crankshaft, bearings etc.? Do I have a higher risk to
encounter major problems?
I'd be most grateful if anybody has experience on this
subject and could advise me.
Many thanks.

Ulrich 'Rick' Hertig
