Not a bad idea, if you have the basic knowledge and mechanical aptitude.

However, finding a cooperative IA may be another story.  It does require an IA to sign off an engine overhaul, as it is a major repair, even though not an alteration.

We have a rule at our shop:

Labor is $X per hour; X+$10 if you watch; X+$20 if you help, and if you ask to borrow a tool, you're shot on sight.

Hello All,
Something to consider.  Overhaul small Continentals yourself,  if and only
if you can find an A&P to supervise.  These engines are about as simple of
an engine that has been made.  Auto mechanics are amazed as to the
clearances that these engines have, especially piston to cylinder clearances.
1.  Get a Continental overhaul and parts Manual  -  Study
2.  Ask around about an A&P who is willing to help - pay him good when
you are convinced he has what it takes.
3.  Tear that little motha apart, clean it up, measure it, send all parts to an
overhaul facility that specializes in a particular part that doesn't meet specs.
This may be several different shops.  Buy new parts that are required.
4.   Remember that each and every part has to have documentation,  new,
overhauled, within specs or whatever your A&P requires.
5.   This is not a major repair or alteration - no 337's, field approval, A.I.'s
or any of that, an A&P will do.
6.   Put it back together and spend the savings on gas or radios.
