Hi Glen et All..
When I purchased our 'Coupe the bubble windshield
rubber at the bottom front was so old it was hard.
I talked with an engineer at Univair and ordered
the proper windshield retaining trim. I also asked what the best adhesive was to
do this job. He sent along a 5 oz tube of 3M Scotch Grip 1300 Rubber and Gasket
adhesive. It cost about $7.00 US.
Applied in the approximate same mannor as contact
cement.
First I fitted the windshield with the trim to the
aircraft slightly pushing down on thebottom of the windscreen to seat the rubber
trim, Next I marked the fwd edge of the rubber trim on the upper skin just aft
of the upper cowl. Remove the assy, clean a/c area with mek and the rubber
trim with alcohol, apply the cement to both pieces (note here that only the
fwd half of the rubber trim need have cement applied to it as the aft half has
to bend up to meet the windscreen). Apply the ruber trim to the upper fuselage
following the guide line previously made, hold fwd edge down with masking tape
for 24 hours. Reinstall the windshield in place. Run a bead of cement along the
inner edge of the assy (in the cockpit) to fill any gaps and to tidy up the
looks a bit.
This is really good stuff, and if done well the
windshield just sits in the rubber trim and is easily removed for maintenance
(changing out side windows)
Good luck.
