I agree with your point of view. May be My mindset goes back to a different time. After being around Aircraft for some 40 years I guess I can allow myself to remember a much better time. I have here some of the more well known Ercoupe Parts Catalogs that go back many years to when prices were much more sensible. It is absolutely shocking to read that year after year, prices escalating into the heavens. The Pricing situation today is sick, plain and simple, and that is one real reason why many of the older aircraft are screaming for help and not getting it. High priced new sport aircraft are out of reach to most people despite their interest. I still have my 1947 PA17 Vagabond Cub that I rebuilt 23 years ago and I can easily afford it because it is an inexpensive a/c to own and to fly. Also have a J3 Cub that will be re-regestered as amateur built once I complete the job of rebuild in a few months. It is also an inexpensive a/c to own and fly especially when you do your own work. My newest little a/c is an N3 Pup single seat. I treasure the three of them. All are chrome molly steel tube and fabric. I fly from a farm strip and enjoy it. If I had to go the Certified route I would have to quit flying. It would be too damn expensive.

Based on the annual I'm presently mired into, plus work last summer
plus the annual + make a plane out of a project over last winter costs,
my old airplane is hardly standing in the way of some peoples'
financial progress. From my perspective, they are progressing quite
well - indeed, too well. Never mind the new radio, used transponder,
new headset for wife, new intercom, GPS and a myriad of other bits,
e.g. fire extinguisher, PTT switches, and so on and so forth...
endless. This summer... what about that hideous old windscreen and the
naked walls next to our legs? This Sport Pilot with an ancient
aircraft hardly feels like a drag on the economy. Except that of
himself and his family.
