John, I have had that problem before . On those smaller Continental engines and from my experience with my beloved 65's which are the same as yours, many people have found themselves with the problem you describe. The pump is made up of two gears and a plate which sandwiches the gears up against the aluminum alloy back section of the engine. [ the area where your mags are attached ] That surface wears out in time and the oil in the pickup tube can slowly drain back down to the oil sump. On one of my engines it takes about a couple of months in warm weather for the oil to drain down from the screen area. Not a big problem for a tail wheel aircraft because the tail can be raised high so as to allow the remaining oil in the oil screen housing to drain onto the pump gears and that usually allows oil pressure again when the engine is restarted. I have been always using #80 oil which is NOT a multi grade type.In hot weather the book calls for #100. Obviously the lower the viscosity such as say a 10W30 would drain through much faster. It being a SAE 10 in all truth. Tied down out in hot sun can be a problem. I had seen an ad in one of the EAA magazines about two years ago from an outfit or person that would re-do the back plate for something like $600 so that the problem would be cured once and for all. It entailed some machining rebuilding. I was interested and should have followed up, but didn't.
I have always liked a somewhat higher viscosity single grade oil as was the type used in the past. On these engines, I don't like using any light oil. Maybe I am sort of old fashioned but I did spend 29 years testing fuels and lubricants and another 7 years developing various types for Industries so that allows me to be somewhat "pig headed" when it comes to the health of my engines.
I would try using the highest allowed viscosity, single grade, not a Multi Grade, for the expected outside air temperature where you keep your A/C.

Subject: [COUPERS-TECH] oil pump looses prime I have an Ercoupe with C 75-12 with carb mod for 85HP that looses prime after not being started for 7 to 10 days.
To reprime, have to take out oil temp probe, squirt oil in to reprime the pump. Anyone have a similar problem or know causes it and or fix ?
