Hi All....

Perhaps....

The initial construction of Coupes right after the war used war surplus aluminum sheet or extrusions. As theses stocks quickly ran out (many different manufacturer were building planes then) recycled (as we know the term today) aluminum was used to manufacture new stocks of sheet and extruded aluminum. Problem might have been that not all of the impurities of the recycled metal were removed or that the combinations for the specific grades of aluminum were correct. Ending up in slightly substandard grade aluminum.

Intergranular corrosion forms from the inside out of the metal, as I believe, and it is usually caused by the grade of material or forming process.

Just thinking out load.

 Cheers
