Syd is correct that that you can get from Ft Pierce to Key West on an over
land route, including the VFR corridors on the Miami Terminal area chart.
Unfortunately, you will be prohibited from flying directly over the land
during part of your over-Keys flight, and there aren't many suitable
off-field landing sites. Also, the there is a good chance that you will have
to be out-of-glide range on approach to Key West airport(should you decide
to fly there) as they keep you out over the water until on short final. . It
is much better/safer/cheaper at Marathon, and not nearly as conjested. I
usually take a direct flight from Ft Pierce to Marathon. Much of this route
is over the Everglades swamps, and the last 15 mi or so as you approach
Marathon is over(shallow) water. So, albeit quicker(approx. 2 3/4 hrs, no
stops) you might not want to take that route. In any event, the FBO at Ft
Pierce (FORT PIERCE JET CENTER) will rent you life jackets, and even a raft,
at reasonable prices. Maybe you should redefine "essential baggage"?

Maybe I am way behind the learning curve, and I have not reviewed the
over-water regs for decades, but would we not need some extra survival
gears for over water flite re the Keys?
With me, my darling wife and essential baggage, I don't think we'd have
room for it.
All the same, seeing this itinerary is making my mouth water for a taste
of this trip.

1. Everyone will be given a pocket notebook to copy down all pilots'
cell phone numbers before takeoff. If you have a radio problem and
can't land at the chosen destination, land somewhere else and call us.
(Cell phone use while in the air is illegal).
2. Slower airplanes will depart each airport first, followed by medium
speed planes followed by faster airplanes.
3. We won't try to fly formations, but if airplanes with similar speeds
wish to fly together, they may.
4. Faster airplanes will pass slower airplanes enroute, either above or
on the right.
5. As soon as each plane gets to each stop it should refuel as soon as
possible (IF NECESSARY) to make room for those following.
6. Everyone will wait at that stop until the slower planes take off
again.
Any suggestions to this plan or to the route are welcome.
