coupers, As you know from my previous post I had a oil consumption problem, using a qt every 1.5 hrs and the oil turning black in said time frame. A recent top ( found one stuck ring and two over size cylinders) which at present has 2.75 hrs and oil is clean and still showing 4.5 qts. Will see how it works out in a few more hrs. So far I'm pleased with the results. Dick L. 3041H PS. Oil temp at 65deg. remains at 179deg. Oil press runs 50 psi at warm engine cruise. O, yes it is a c85-12. ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Cooper" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I have a C-85 and the dip stick is marked at 4-1/2 quarts. About 1/4 -1/2 quart is promptly blown out with one hour, then the next 1/2 quart is gone within 1-2 hours.

There is no scientific reason for this behavior, assuming the crankcase venting system is functioning as designed. Any oil level from 5 quarts on down is safely outside the engine casing and thus should be unaffected. The one thing that does change, however, is the relationship between the oil level and the fill neck. Ergo, the only explanation I can come up with that makes any sense is a leak at the filler cap or in the tank itself interfering with the oil drainback.

2.5 quarts is too close to the minimum required for adequate cooling. (demonstrated to be 2.25 quarts, and Ercoupes are not known for running cool...) I'd try and keep it at least 3.5 quarts.

Lycomings are a completely different animal.
