One more technical note. I saw a pretty motor at
EAA-Arlington a few years back. Really snazzy radial.
Now, feature this. The "crank shaft" was an
ellipse track that the pistons (8 of `em) ran on. Thus, each piston went
up and down TWICE per "crank" revolution.
Critique:
An ellipse is hard to precision form or
manufacture.
The "grip" of the pistons on the track would be a
bugger to engineer and debug.
The wear would all occur on the quarter of the ellipse
that was below the "combustion cycle."
Upshot: No investors and no snazzy radial for the
front of one's Ercoupe.

turned out the rotary's where VERY loud and it ended up being a toss up on
which engine was better based on weight,performance and cost..........
