If there are any hot spot carbon buildups, the engine could continue
to sputter with the mags off. Opening the throttle from an idle position quickly
makes for a very lean and cold air mixture into the cyls....cooling down the
potential hot carbon, so it does not ignite the fuel mixture..and cause "run
on". A cool down idle period of a minute of so also helps prevent "run
on".
